In order to address not only the global digital gender gap but also bring African women at par with their counterparts around the world, conscious and intentional efforts must be made in providing and enabling an environment that will expose, develop and empower girls and women to take up/engage in careers in computing and other information technology fields. It is within this backdrop that Give1 Project Gambia organises ALL GIRLS TECH-CAMP across the country. The Tech Camp provides training for young girls through intensive and interactive sessions aimed at introducing participants to Web Design, Computer Graphics, Coding, and Database Design, laced with career talks and advice from leading women in technology in The Gambia. The initiative brings girls from across the country to participate in training programs being offered in which they have the opportunity to learn new skills, develop critical thinking and problem solving capacities and broaden their horizon in modern technology. Training programs also integrate leadership and entrepreneurial sessions where participants are taught about the various components of leadership and entrepreneurship. After every training, participants are assigned with a mentor who encourages and monitors performances, and help in shaping each participant to become mature entrepreneurs. At the end of each camp, an award ceremony is organised with a GIVE1 EMPOWERMENT talk on the importance of ICT training for girls in The Gambia and Africa at large.
The Women Empowerment Summit will bring together a dynamic and world-changing community of emerging young women leaders from all over the globe such as female entrepreneurs, human rights activists, lawyers, bankers, innovators, young and academic leaders and many more to learn from one another, build networks and partnerships that will tackle issues that affect women’s advancement in all aspects of life through family, community and national leadership initiatives.
Give1 talks series is a monthly talks session where specific guests are invited to talk to young people on a variety of topics that are meant to help in molding their lives. Various topics are identified for open discussions which provide high levels of interactions between the speakers and the participating youths. The speakers vary from leading politicians, business leaders, artists, writers, media women and men, as well as opinion leaders who debate/lecture young people on empowerment focused themes. The main objective is to promote awareness of the very important and mandatory role of young people in our societies and provide them with life choice information that generate life changing opportunities for them. The Give1 Talks Series will not only motivate young leaders but will also develop their skills in becoming future leaders that will drive positive and sustainable change in their communities.
Recognizing that the foundation of sustainable development relies upon the empowerment and education of its citizens, the Give1 Project Gambia Book Club is designed to support youths throughout The Gambia in enhancing their educational performance. With only few libraries for a population of nearly 2 million, school children struggle to find reading materials essential in improving their literacy rates. The absence of reading materials, resources and infrastructure throughout the country has resulted to an alarming rate of illiteracy in the country. Recognizing the critical role that education and literacy provides to alleviating the heavy burdens of poverty, students attend both primary and secondary schools only to find out that they do not have access to the required learning materials. Taking into consideration the National Priorities of The Gambia, the Give1 Project Gambia Book Club has been designed to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education. The book club will give children and adolescents throughout the six regions of the country an opportunity to access learning materials that are crucial to improving their literacy rates. The book club will inspire and instill reading habits in both primary and secondary school children that will support their academic development. It will improve analytical skills of adolescents, improve the vocabulary of students and better prepare them for higher education. Currently, there are less than 10 public libraries in The Gambia that are available to almost 2 million citizens. Without appropriate infrastructure and materials, communities throughout the country are unable to fully support the academic and intellectual development of their citizens. The Give1 Project Gambia Book Club together with partners both locally and internationally will provide not only the learning materials required to improve literacy but also support and encourage emerging authors. The Book Club will re-introduce the reading habit in our population at a young age for educational and recreational purposes. It will improve language skills of the youth thus improving their chances in life after high school. It will help open a world of opportunities and adventure for kids through reading and discussions. It will bring students together to form opinions on issues they read about and express or support opinions on these issues with their peers.
The Concept of Give1Arts globally is centered on the 3Cs; Community- Give1 Arts creates a community for creative individuals in visual and performing arts to identify themselves within their countries/cities/membership bases and to learn about and support each other's progress. Cultivation-Give1Arts members pro-actively learn from one another and demonstrate their leadership skills by selecting to organize one of the many monthly workshops. Workshops have 3 variations for them to choose from: Member conducts the workshop themselves, training others in their area of creative expertise and thereby developing and creating awareness of their skills. Member invites someone from the community who is a creative or plays a pivotal role in impacting artists to give a workshop (a talk) on themes relating to theory or practice. Member organize visits that inspire or reveal artistry, for example; Attend a performance, visit a museum/exhibition or visit a historical site. Collaboration- Give 1Arts encourages members to explore ways to not only learn from each other but to work together. Creativity is maximized by experimenting and trying new perspectives, and collaborative forces pushes one to step outside of their comfort zone and grow artistically.
